launch of spectacular VR journey ‘dare to discover’

Het Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam will be launching the spectacular Virtual Reality (VR) trip through time entitled ‘dare to discover | a VR journey’ on 14 December 2017. The VR experience on board the East Indiaman Amsterdam transports museum visitors back to the Dutch Golden Age. This exciting journey includes a flight over the historic harbour of Amsterdam, and visitors can also experience the rapid development of the area into a busy port.

One of the absolute highlights of The National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam is Joan Blaeu's map of the world, dating from 1648. Its size is impressive – over 2 by 3 metres – and at the time it displayed the most up-to-date knowledge of the world we live in. The map is once again open to the public as part of the exhibition 'The world according to Joan Blaeu | Master Cartographer of the Golden Age'.

What do a life jacket from the Costa Concordia, a letter written by Michiel de Ruyter dating from 1657, Mesdag's masterpiece from 1898, and a globe from 1613 have in common? All these works are part of the unique collection of The National Maritime Museum. The collection history of the museum and its unique objects is central in the new exhibition 'Drive' that opens to the public on 1 October 2016.
